Established in the 1990s, DALI is a standard that allows the lights in a building to communicate in a manner similar to that of computers on a network. Each device — such as LED drivers and ballasts — has a unique number between 0 and 63. Giving each device an ID allows the DALI controller to communicate with individual ballasts or groups of ballasts without affecting the other ballasts on the network.

Electronic control of lighting ballasts isn’t new. DALI is unique, though, in that allows for bi-directional communication. A DALI controller doesn’t exist only to send commands to lighting ballasts; it can also receive messages from the ballasts. With DALI, a building manager doesn’t need to wait for a complaint from a tenant to know that a ballast has stopped working. When a ballast has a problem, it sends a message to the controller.

Implementing DALI can also have far-reaching effects for companies concerned about becoming greener and reducing energy usage. DALI makes it easy, for example, to dim a ballast close to a window during the day to capitalize on natural sunlight. Since each ballast has a unique ID, the command doesn’t affect any of the other lights in the room. DALI ballasts can also report their own energy usage, making it easy to manage utility billing in a building with multiple tenants.

The best feature of DALI may be the fact that installing DALI-compatible lighting fixtures requires no special knowledge because each fixture requires just two wires to connect to the network. Traditional lighting relays may require as many as 40 wires per device. The owner of a DALI network controls and programs the lights using an intuitive software interface. With a mouse click, the owner can obtain a status report from the network, control individual lights or switch between pre-programmed scenes. The operator of the network is the only person who needs to understand how DALI works. In contrast, workers with relatively little skill can install the network.
