The Latest: Lord says he respects CNN, disagrees with firing

NEW YORK — The Latest on CNN's firing of conservative commentator Jeffrey Lord after he tweeted a Nazi slogan at a critic (all times local):

9:45 p.m.

Conservative commentator Jeffrey Lord says he respects CNN and its journalists, but disagrees with the network's decision to fire him over a tweet in which he used a Nazi slogan.

Lord said Thursday night that he used the slogan "Seig Heil" to mock the head of a liberal advocacy group, Media Matters for America. He said it was part of a column he wrote for the conservative magazine The American Spectator in which he accused Media Matters of employing fascist tactics by targeting advertisers of prominent conservative hosts such as Sean Hannity.

Lord declined to discuss specifics about how CNN informed him of his firing.

He said he was in no way endorsing Nazism or fascist tactics, but was simply trying to mock critics who he thinks use their tactics to silence conservative voices.

CNN says it has cut ties with conservative commentator Jeffrey Lord after he tweeted a Nazi salute at a critic.

A network spokesperson confirmed Thursday that Lord was no longer with the network and said that Nazi salutes are indefensible. The statement came hours after Lord tweeted the Nazi slogan "Sieg Heil" at the head of a liberal advocacy group, Media Matters for America.

Lord, who is a vocal supporter of President Donald Trump, has frequently clashed with CNN hosts, including Don Lemon and Anderson Cooper.

He is a contributor to the conservative magazine The American Spectator, and is a former aide to Jack Kemp and Ronald Reagan.

An email message sent to Lord was not immediately returned.
