Irving's 27 points, 18 assists leads Celtics past Raptors

Jan 17, 2019

BOSTON — Kyrie Irving said he regretted criticizing his younger teammates, then he made a call to a former teammate he also owed an apology. The Celtics point guard said on Wednesday that he called LeBron James over the weekend to apologize for failing to understand the burden the four-time NBA MVP carried when they played together on the Cleveland Cavaliers. "I had to call Bron, and tell him I apologize for being that young player that wanted everything at his fingertips," Irving said after the Celtics beat the Toronto Raptors 118-107 on Wednesday night. "I wanted to be the...

Chicago inspectors find code violations at R. Kelly's studio

Jan 17, 2019

CHICAGO — Chicago building inspectors have found code violations at R. Kelly's recording studio, including evidence the industrial space was used as a residence. Building Department spokesman Gregg Cunningham says the agency will list the violations during a court hearing next week. He says the inspectors were looking at plumbing, electrical systems and carpentry. Kelly's attorney, Steve Greenburg, says no one was living at the studio and it should not be surprising that it included places for sleeping or taking breaks. Kelly has been hit in recent weeks with sexual misconduct allegations. The Lifetime documentary series "Surviving R. Kelly" recently...

Bob Costas exiting longtime home at NBC Sports

Jan 17, 2019

LOS ANGELES — Bob Costas, who stepped down as NBC's prime-time Olympics host two years ago, has left the network's sports division altogether. NBC Sports said Wednesday that Costas parted ways with his longtime employer, providing no further details. A representative for Costas didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. Costas, 66, served as the emcee for NBC's Olympics 11 times starting in 1992. In early 2017, he stepped aside for network newcomer Mike Tirico, formerly with ESPN. When the switch was announced in early 2017, Costas said he had decided on his own that the time was right...

Sinclair debuts streaming service for its local TV stations

Jan 17, 2019

NEW YORK — Sinclair Broadcast wants to "Stirr" up streaming. The nation's largest owner of television stations launched a free, ad-supported streaming service Wednesday drawing on local news, sports and other programs from the 191 TV stations it owns in 89 U.S. markets. Sinclair said the motivation behind Stirr is in part to help viewers "access the local news and lifestyle programming that is relevant to their everyday life." Sinclair was admonished by media watchdogs in April after the sports news service Deadspin pieced together clips of dozens of TV anchors for Sinclair reading from the same script. The script...

Jan 17, 2019

STAMFORD, Conn. — A TV journalist known for confronting would-be child predators has been snared himself in a police investigation alleging he wrote bad checks for $13,000 worth of marketing materials. Former "To Catch a Predator" host Chris Hansen was arrested Monday in his hometown of Stamford, Connecticut. He was charged with issuing a bad check and released on a promise to appear in court. Police say the 59-year-old Hansen wrote two bad checks to a local vendor for 355 mugs, 288 T-shirts and 650 vinyl decals he bought in the summer of 2017. Phone and email messages were left...
