Megyn Kelly apologizes for suggesting blackface OK

Oct 24, 2018

NEW YORK — NBC's Megyn Kelly swiftly apologized Tuesday for a morning show segment that questioned why dressing up in blackface for a Halloween costume is wrong. Following a social media backlash, Kelly wrote in an email to NBC News colleagues that she realized such behavior is wrong, that the history of blackface in culture is abhorrent. On her morning show, the 47-year-old news host said that dressing up in blackface was OK when she was a kid as long as you were impersonating a character. She questioned why it had been considered racist when a character on "The Real...

CBS is the week's top TV network, but faces more competition

Oct 24, 2018

NEW YORK — CBS was television's most popular network last week, but that status is no longer the slam-dunk that it has been for the last decade and a half. It was CBS' second weekly victory of the young television season, matching NBC's two victories, the Nielsen company said Tuesday. NBC handily won among viewers aged 18 to 49, the demographic group that it cares the most about. Sunday night football gives NBC a big boost in the fall, but series like "This Is Us," ''Manifest" and Dick Wolf's "Chicago" dramas make the network more competitive with scripted series than...

A year into #MeToo, what's next for the movement?

Oct 24, 2018

NEW YORK — With the #MeToo movement passing the one-year mark, key voices in the movement are assessing progress and looking forward to the next phase. For activist Alyssa Milano, it's about winning the cultural battle, and looking beyond what she calls setbacks like the confirmation of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, or a dropped charge in the Harvey Weinstein case. She's advocating for gender equality education, and passage of the long-stalled Equal Rights Amendment. For attorney Debra Katz, who represented Kavanaugh accuser Christine Blasey Ford, it's about improving the laws governing sexual harassment. And for "Me Too"...

After making a hit, 'Making a Murderer' returns with more

Oct 24, 2018

NEW YORK — Netflix's "Making a Murderer" was a global hit, introducing the world to the case of Steven Avery and his nephew Brendan Dassey, convicted of murdering a Wisconsin woman. Season two, with 10 new episodes, is now available on Netflix. It updates viewers on the men's attempts to turn around their convictions to get them released from prison. In response to criticism that their version is one-sided, directors Moira Demos and Laura Ricciardi say the journey the cameras are following has always been Avery and Dassey's, but they've kept their opinions out of it. They also list at...

'Black Panther' costume designer to receive career award

Oct 24, 2018

LOS ANGELES — Ruth E. Carter, the creator of the stunning costumes of "Black Panther" and numerous other Hollywood films, will receive the career achievement award at next year's Costume Designers Guild Awards. The guild announced Tuesday that the two-time Academy Award nominee will receive the honor at the 21st annual ceremony held Feb. 19 in Beverly Hills. Carter's costumes for the blockbuster "Black Panther" earned widespread praise for how they incorporated African culture.
